Service Learning in Guatemala - CMCET and REC with Dr. Dan Ferguson and Dr. Brian Sandford

REC 276 International Field Studies or
CMCET 401 International Construction and Learning
(students may enroll in only one courses)

This program will be held in La Antigua, Guatemala and will focus primarily on service learning by working 5-6 hours per day in service, construction, or teaching projects in schools, orphanages, treatment facilities, etc. Students will be divided into small teams and will work directly with Guatemalans which will immerse them culturally and linguistically by providing opportunities to use Spanish with native speakers. Students will also have an opportunity to study Spanish for 2 hours daily, and will stay with Guatemalan families, who will provide food and housing during much of the experience. The program will be organized by Maximo Nivel.

On weekends we will visit cultural attractions and national parks.

STAY WITH A GUATEMALAN FAMILY
Students will stay with families in La Antigua. You will be treated
as a member of the family while enjoying authentic Guatemalan food prepared
at home, develop a lasting friendship with very warm people and have an
experience you will never forget!

SCHOLARSHIP & FINANCIAL AID
PSU may be able to provide a scholarship. The exact amount will be announced in March 2014. Students can use their financial aid for this program as well.

COURSE CREDIT - TWO OPTIONS:

REC 276 - This program will carry 3 credits for field study. Rec majors are required
to have 100 hours of documented field work prior to doing their
internship. This course will provide approximately 75 of those hours for
our work with the children. These credits can be counted toward the field
work credit or as an elective toward graduation.

CMCET 401- Places students in contextual learning environments in Guatemala to learn Spanish then practice the language through real-world construction related projects.

SPANISH LANGUAGE IS NOT REQUIRED
Sure, any knowledge of Spanish will be helpful, even if it was just that
semester you took in high school. But it is not required that you have any
proficiency in Spanish to participate in this program.

MAJOR OR MINOR
All majors are invited to participate in this program as it will be richly
rewarding for all.

Payment plan (amounts may change):
February 15th, 2014 - $300 paid directly to Maximo Nivel (non-refundable)
February 15th, 2014 - $270 program fee paid to PSU
March 30, 2014 - $337 paid directly to Maximo Nivel
March 30, 2014 - $270 program fee paid to PSU
April 15, 2014 - $330 paid directly to Maximo Nivel
April 15, 2014 - $235 program fee paid to PSU

total - $967 to Maximo Nivel and $775 to PSU = $1742

Refund policy:

Maximo Nivel Deposit is paid directly to Maximo Nivel and is non-refundable.

Maximo Nivel payments will be made directly to Maximo Nivel and follow their refund policies.

Program fees can be refunded except for any monies which have already been spent, such as faculty costs. Once money has been spent with the anticipation of a student's participation in the program it is not refundable.

Students will make their own airline ticket purchases. Any need for a refund will be strictly between the airline and the student.
